How to Repair an HMI Touchscreen: Parts & Testing Guide

Most 'dead' HMIs are a 30-dollar part, not a 2,000-dollar panel. Here is how to tell which part — and what to replace.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Photograph the rear label (full MPN, revision, serial) before opening anything — this is what identifies the board variant.
  2. Check the 24 VDC supply and communication cable at the panel first; a brown-out or damaged comms cable mimics a panel failure.
  3. Run the built-in self-test / calibration mode (usually a hidden corner touch at power-up) to separate touch faults from display faults.
  4. If touch is dead but the display is fine, the fault is almost always the touch panel or its flex cable — the cheapest and most replaceable part.
  5. If the display is dim, dark or white, the fault is in the main board, inverter board or backlight assembly.
  6. Replace at board level: disconnect, swap the board, reconnect, power up and verify touch, display and comms before closing the case.

Replacement parts & selection notes

We source and bench-test main boards, display PCBs, backlight assemblies and touch panels for common HMI series (MT4000/MT5000, PanelView Standard/Plus, OP/MP/TP series). Send the rear label photo and fault description for a quote — many boards can be repaired rather than replaced.

Frequently asked questions

My HMI screen is white but touch works — what failed?

Almost always the inverter board or its connectors. Send the rear label photo and we confirm the board variant and availability.

Is board-level repair covered by warranty?

Replacement boards carry a 12-month warranty. Repaired boards carry a 3-month warranty on the repair.

Can I replace the touch panel myself?

Yes — it is a connector and adhesive job on most panels. We supply the matched touch panel with instructions; handle the old flex cable carefully.
